‹anthos› is the new showcase for Swiss landscape architecture. The yearbook of the Federation of Swiss Landscape Architects (BSLA) is a text volume, supplemented by a “best of” of landscape architecture in Switzerland and a great photo section.

The first issue is dedicated to the topic of urban climate. It deals with the concrete challenges that the changes in the urban climate pose for landscape architecture and its makers. In the built environment, landscape architects have an important role to play in coping with the climate crisis and especially in adapting our living space to climate change, writes Claudia Moll, Co-President BSLA in her foreword.

The thematic section of the yearbook consists of 46 climate tips, texts on the climate miracle weapon tree, “Schwammstadtplanung” in Berlin, Copenhagen and Vienna, the BSLA’s position on urban climate, statements by landscape architects on dealing with the climate crisis, and texts on climate-neutral building and planning in practice. A roundtable discussion addresses how much space and land we need to make available for the climate.

The yearbook section presents fifteen landscape architecture projects from the past four years, selected by an independent international jury. This “Best of” forms the picture-rich second part of the yearbook. The following landscape architecture projects are presented in pictures and text:

  • Öffentlicher Strand und Hafen Eaux-Vives (Genf) von Atelier Descombes Rampini, Genf
  • Parc de l’amour éternel (Lausanne) von Johannes von Pechmann Stadtlandschaft, Zürich
  • Aufwertung der Gärten und Zugänge Schloss Chillon (Veytaux) von L’Atelier du Paysage, Lausanne

The wonderful photo series at the beginning and end of the book are also very impressive. The photos by Jules Spinatsch are taken from the works “Abhang” and “Hart an der Grenze” (Hard on the Edge), which show the influence of natural forces on the earth and its climate. Jules Spinatsch’s works are shown at the Kunsthaus Zurich, the Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
