From the outside, it actually already looks quite finished – and there is not much more to be done structurally on the inside either. And yet the extension building by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, located on Zurich Heimplatz, will remain closed for quite some time. The focus is on the demanding fine-tuning of the building services, which must ensure that the precious art treasures will always have exactly the right climate under all external influences.

On 11 December 2020, the keys to the Kunsthaus extension were handed over: After about twelve years of planning and construction, the building has become the property of the Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus. However, the opening in full operation is not planned until October 2021.

For April and May 2021, the Kunsthaus invites you to a preview, with performances, guided tours and the installation of the first, non-climate-sensitive works. The Chipperfield building will close over the summer. Then the valuable art will be brought in. And on 9/10 October 2021, the grand opening is scheduled – the first presentation of the Kunsthaus collection on both sides of Heimplatz together with the top-class private collections Bührle, Merzbacher and Looser. This marks the beginning of full operation.

This was announced by the Kunsthaus Zürich in a media release at the end of 2020, and it also provided a first glimpse of the new building with a series of impressive photographs. We are pleased to show you the pictures here and thus awaken your desire to be able to visit the building live in April or May.
