Too many holiday homes or flats follow the usual. They are standard architecture, 08.15 furnishings, usually part of a large, loveless settlement and without individual charm. Friends of good architecture and the special are usually disappointed by such accommodation; they would like something better for their most precious days of the year. For all these architectural gourmets, there are many gems in Switzerland. The WUW magazine has already reported on this in an article on the offer of holidays in architectural buildings.

Villa Vals is a somewhat different but still a very special holiday home. It was designed by Bjarne Mastenbroek and Christian Müller of the architecture firms SeARCH and CMA respectively. Their design plan was to integrate the villa completely into the landscape so as not to disturb the unspoilt nature. Therefore, access to the villa is only possible through an underground tunnel that runs directly through the mountainside from the nearby Graubünder stable. The façade of the house is slightly sloped, which enhances the view of the mountain landscape in the opposite valley.

Villa Vals is a detached residence right next to the famous Therme Vals. The luxurious villa is extremely quiet and offers a breathtaking view of the unspoiled nature. The house with around 200 square metres of living space is completely dug into the mountainside. It can accommodate ten people and is surrounded by a large garden that offers plenty of privacy. A glass façade opens onto the terrace and offers a spectacular view of green meadows and, in winter, snow-covered slopes and mountain peaks.

Completed in 2009, the house was built with local entrepreneurs and furnished in collaboration with a variety of international designers and companies. Their idiosyncratic designs fit well with the villa’s spacious, industrial architecture. Pieces and objects by Hella Jongerius, Demakersvan, Scholten & Baijings, Marcel Wanders, Claudy Jongstra, Royal Tichelaar Makkum and Vitra Nederland, among others, were used. The tasteful interior is an eclectic but balanced mix of contemporary design. A unique combination of architecture, interior and design.
