Women’s European Championship – Cheering allowed.

The Women’s European Football Championship in Switzerland is already in full swing and will continue until the final on July 27; and hope springs eternal that “our” women will still be in the running.

However, as noise and cheering are less appreciated in some residential areas by those who prefer to enjoy the summer evenings in peace and quiet and fall asleep at night without any noise, the in-house lawyer Stéphanie Bartholdi of the Hauseigentümerverband (HEV Schweiz) has published house rules just in time to show what people should and should not do in connection with the Women’s European Championship 25 so as not to disturb the peace in their neighborhood. The HEV warns that there is no right to make unlimited noise. It is therefore better to leave the TV in the living room and not turn it up too loud. However, you can cheer a little louder.

Cheering is allowed, but within limits, says HEV Schweiz.

Conversely, however, you can also expect tolerance from your neighbors: cheering during a game or a shout of joy when a goal is scored should also be tolerated during quiet hours. Once the game is over, however, it is important to refrain from “loud music, cheering, and shouting” long after the game has ended. Those who live near a public viewing area will also have to put up with a little more noise, as the organizers cannot be expected to insist on “strict adherence to the applicable quiet hours.”

Another major issue for the HEV lawyer is the display of flags of the participating nations. She writes in the guidelines: “As this is not advertising, displaying flags does not require a building permit.” However, she warns: “Unlike the interior of a balcony, the exterior of a property is not part of the rented property.” This means that permission must be obtained from the landlord – or the flag must be hung on the inside. However, the HEV also calls for tolerance on the part of landlords and owners, advising them to “tolerate the display of national flags.”

Now all that remains is to hope that the Swiss women’s team scores lots of goals and gets as far as possible so that we can make proper use of the legal “celebration leeway.”
