Biel Photo Days show “Horizons”.

05.05.2025

The 28th edition of the Biel Photo Days from May 3 to 25, 2025, entitled Horizons, invites visitors to reflect on the landscape around us through various photographic perspectives: a landscape whose role in our constantly changing society is increasingly being discussed; a landscape that is created and narrated; a landscape that challenges our memory and imagination.

A total of 18 exhibitions (including six world premieres and four Swiss premieres) and the works of 15 contemporary artists from Switzerland and abroad will be presented in the form of a photographic tour that takes visitors to ten locations in the city of Biel: public and private institutions, off spaces, and public spaces.

Horizons

Whether urban, forest or industrial, our landscapes are developed, built up and inhabited. As a space altered by humans, the landscape is not only used, but also observed and recorded in maps, paintings, photographs and writings. In Renaissance paintings, it is fleetingly hinted at through windows or used as a backdrop; since then, its design has evolved. It has become more complex. Our relationship with the landscape has changed over time and is increasingly discussed in our society.

Structured or fragmented, the landscape is closely linked to the real or imagined relationship that humans have with it. Describing a landscape creates a narrative, a backdrop, a scene. We also draw on our memories and search for new ways of perceiving, understanding, and representing them. The 28th edition of the Biel/Bienne Photographic Days presents new horizons and contemporary perspectives that deal with landscapes and reveal new forms of representation.

Thanks to a partnership with CAPPrize (International Prize for Contemporary African Photography), this year the public will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the current work of African photographers. The works of two 2024 prize winners will be presented.
